ninety-nine are somewhere else--the one gourd


A gourd is in the melon family, has many vines so it is also called ‘a hundred gourds’. Its leaves are heart-shaped and it blooms white flowers in summer. It grows nuts of wasp-waisted shapes. In autumn, people take out the insides, dry and make them into sake containers. In one gourd house somewhere, ninty nine gourds remain.
