Chiyo-Jo's Haiku
Summer
during the morning hotness unknown to the sky
the hydrangea attracts the dew--morning sunlight
evening temple bell--no dew drops from the green leaves
duckweed--the butterfly tries to press it down
a single spider's thread ties the duckweed to the shore
moving the bamboo--still hotness
coolness for beautiful people--change of kimono
the sun remains in the deutzia flowers--under cloudy skies
peonies on the dividing hedge--neighbors happy
airing out kimonos as well as her heart is never enough
each wind makes the leaves bud--this year's bamboo
blowing wind--missed hearing the cuckoo
buds on the grass light up--fire-flies!
mosquito-net grass also hangs at the flower shrine
only over the river darkness flows : fire-flies
leaving Kyoto--awakened at night by waterbirds
ranges of clouds come close when I look up
the hut no problem--coolness no problem either
make the children bow to the mountain--iced mochi
the loneliness felt by the person hearing the cuckoo
clouds at dawn--yesterday's fireflies forgotten
clear water : no front no back
cool breeze--enclosed in my kimono sleeves till falling asleep
coolness--the heron stretches its neck as much as it can
the coolness--of the bottom of her kimono in the bamboo grove
coolness--pacing back and forth until embarrassed
coolness--the sailboats chased by their shadows
keeping cool--in the deep night strangers on the bridge
farewell floating flower--the poppy
tomorrow too rice-planting songs on the road
a treasure cupping it and cupping it--clear water
waterfall diminishes--cicadas' voices in the mountains
the coolness emptying a tobacco box--the return home
the moon's coolness--on that leaf, this leaf not only light
lights on lights off--falling fireflies
touching the fishing line--the summer moon
going backwards beyond her companions--rice planting songs
hands put all things on the ground--the clear water
first cicada heard from an unknown tree
above the mirage--mountains ofclouds
the bindweed flower's bold face--noon temple bell
afternoon glories--on a dangerous bridge water mirror
the bindweed flower's behavior thinner at night
rouged lips forgotten--clear spring water
cuckoo--still a blank paper, what a pity
no pine trees--only the breeze of a fan vibrating
a send-off with only words--a molting bird
on the road today's rain the seed for clear water
she also cups the spring water for her travel writing brush
a bird in my sight disappears into a mountain of clouds
sounds enter the water on this night--hototogisu
moon flowers ! when a woman's skin is revealed
moon flowers--whose carriage is abandoned there?
moon flowers--even in Kyoto women's laughter loud
moon flowers-- the beauty of hidden things
evening showers--not over the people but over the sea
spring stays in the iris
the wind among the young bamboo changes day by day
I forget where to put myself--the heat
going deep even the wind disappears--the cuckoo
removing kimono's cotton --dreams tonight of Suma Akashi
taking out the cotton for the first time --the terrible night kimono
